Billing Policy
Healthscope Pathology strives to provide a comprehensive, high quality pathology service for our Doctors and patients. To maintain such a quality service we endeavour to provide a fee structure that is fair and reasonable. Our out-of-pocket fees will be kept at a minimum with a maximum out of pocket charge of $155 for all tests covered by Medicare*. There are many different patient and fee classifications that Medicare Australia controls and here is a brief summary of some of these:
* Not all tests attract a Medicare rebate.
Bulk Billing
Healthscope Pathology may be able to Bulk Bill the following:
- Pensioners
- Healthcare Cardholders
- Veterans Affairs Gold Cardholders
* Some tests and conditions apply. Seniors cards and Commonwealth Seniors health card holders are not eligible.
Out Patient Accounts
Out Patients will receive an account from Healthscope Pathology. These fees are aligned to Australian Medical Association (AMA) recommended rates. In some circumstances a ‘co-payment’ applies, which means that Medicare Australia does not cover the entire invoice amount and you therefore need to pay the difference.
Healthscope Pathology can lodge your claim to Medicare Australia on your behalf. Once your claim has been submitted to Medicare they will assess your claim and send you a cheque for benefits payable, which you then mail onto Healthscope Pathology. To check if you are eligible for this please contact our customer service team on 1300 369 762.
WorkCover, Transport Accident Commission & Insurance claims
If your referral relates to a WorkCover, Transport Accident Commission or Insurance claim, then your account can be sent directly to those organizations. You will need to provide your Claim number at every visit.
Pre-Employment, Immigration, Health screening, Travel, Overseas Visitors
Testing for these groups are not eligible for Medicare rebates and an upfront payment is required. Overseas visitors will also need to pay up front and then claim back from their Insurance company.
Overseas Students
If you hold a current student insurance with Medibank Private, OSHC Worldcare, AHM or BUPA we may be able to bill directly to your insurer. Otherwise an upfront payment is required.
Private Hospital Inpatients Including Day Procedures
Healthscope Pathology has “no gap” agreements with participating Health Funds. Where there is an agreement in place; your Health Fund may be billed directly * conditions apply. If there is no agreement with your Health Fund then Healthscope Pathology will issue you with an account.
Uninsured Inpatients will receive an account from Healthscope Pathology and we are committed to keeping these “out of pocket” payments to a minimum.

Veteran Affairs Gold Cardholders

How Do I Pay My Account
Healthscope Pathology will send you an account upon completion of the tests. The following options are set out on your account: -
- Pay your account in full and an official receipt will be forwarded to you. You will need the receipt and your invoice to claim a rebate from Medicare if eligible.
- Healthscope Pathology can directly submit your claim to Medicare Australia. Medicare will then send you a cheque which, you will then need to forward with any additional outstanding payment. Contact our customer service team on 1300 369 762 for details on how this works and to see if you are eligible.
